Cardboard Crash Sundance Edition 1.1

Cardboard Crash was an Official Selection at the Sundance Film Festival 2016. To engage with this virtual reality experience, users are invited to install the app, launch it, and then secure their iPhone in a Google Cardboard viewer.

This immersive experiment delves into the complex ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence algorithms in the context of self-driving cars. Through the scenario presented in Cardboard Crash, participants are placed in the driver's seat of an autonomous vehicle, forced to confront a challenging decision during an inevitable collision event.

The project prompts profound questions about the accountability of artificial intelligence when making critical choices on behalf of humans. It raises important inquiries about the ethical standards to which these algorithms should be held, emphasizing the significance of thoughtful design and selection processes.

Cardboard Crash was conceived by Vincent McCurley in collaboration with the NFB Digital Studio, and is a production of the National Film Board of Canada.
